AI Framework Converts Medieval Manuscript Art Into 3D Models for Museums and Users

Researchers developed a semi-automated system that transforms 2D medieval manuscript illustrations into 3D digital models for extended reality, 3D printing, and web visualization. Testing seven AI image-to-3D methods on 69 manuscript figures, the team found Hi3DGen offered the best balance of quality for expert refinement. The technology enables AR overlays on physical manuscripts and tactile prints for visually impaired users.
